∞ Apple grabbed 85 percent tablet market share in 2010

Apple’s iPad garnered 85 percent of the tablet market share in 2010, according to new research released on Wednesday.

[ad#Google Adsense 300x250 in story]ABI Research said that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab came in second place with a distant 8 percent market share. Archos’s Internet Tablet came in with just 2 percent of the market.

Those three companies account for 95 percent of the total tablet market share.

“Many new entrants are looking to differentiate themselves from the $600+ ASP of the iPad, so low-feature and low-cost designs will become common,” said ABI’s Jeff Orr. “We expect between 40 and 50 million media tablets to ship worldwide in 2011.”

Of course, there are many new tablets coming in 2011. Motorola’s Xoom and RIM’s PlayBook are among the new entries that could take small amounts of market share this year.

Is anyone else surprised that it’s only 85%?

Yes. I’m more surprised that Samsung Galaxy Tab took a full 8%.

Didn’t they create the market? I know Microsoft had tablets 10 years ago. But they never caught on and the other tablet makers have barely gotten their products out the door. 85% may be on the low side of the estimate.

I still have not seen one Galaxy Tab: not in airports, not on buses, none at coffee shops. Plenty of iPads, though.

You should hang out in Best Buy warehouses more often. I heard they have plenty in those.

Without having seen the source, I’m guessing that whatever ABI counts as falling within the “tablet market” will probably include a lot of devices that don’t get much public discussion. Perhaps including vertical/specialty stuff like what the UPS people carry.

If few people have ever seen any Galaxy Tabs and supposedly Samsung moved quite a few of them, then I guess seeing a Motorola Xoom anywhere would be as rare as seeing a polar bear lumbering around in Venice Beach, California. I think Google really dropped the ball by distributing that beta Honeycomb OS on tablets to unsuspecting consumers. The whole Android Honeycomb tablet platform is nothing but an unfinished work in progress. Google got caught with its pants around the ankles because the company didn’t get a chance to copy Apple fast enough like they did with Android OS smartphones.

Besides search, what product has Google shipped that wasn’t beta? Nearly everything they do is half-baked knockoffs.

I’m guessing Viagra has the remaining 15%

I don’t get what the other 15% are. The only tablets seen in the wild are iPads. I have seen a Samsung Tab …. only in stores!

Its still very early in this market, Apple has the advantages of being the first one to create a market for this kind of device and already has a second generation model. The 85% market share number can only go down from here as other companies are developing their own Tabs.

I think by the end of 2011, you will see the Playbook in the number 2 spot, ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
