∞ iPad 2 tops Consumer Reports tablet ratings

Consumer Reports on Tuesday said that Apple’s iPad topped its ratings of 10 tablets.

[ad#Google Adsense 300x250 in story]“So far, Apple is leading the tablet market in both quality and price, which is unusual for a company whose products are usually premium priced,” said Paul Reynolds, Electronics Editor at Consumer Reports. “However, it’s likely we’ll see more competitive pricing in tablets as other models begin to hit the market.”

The consumer watch-dog said the iPad’s closest competitor is the Motorola Xoom. Consumer Reports tested tablets from Archos, Dell, Motorola, Samsung, and ViewSonic, as well as a number of models from Apple.

The tablets were test using 17 criteria, including touch-screen responsiveness, versatility, portability, screen glare, and ease of use. The end result was that the iPad 2 with Wi-Fi + 3G (32G), topped the Ratings, scoring Excellent in nearly every category. The first-generation iPad, $580, also outscored many of the other models tested but tied with the Motorola Xoom, $800, according to Consumer Reports.

The iPad 2 really ran away with the battery test. When playing a movie, it lasted 12.2 hours compared to the lowest rated Archos, which lasted only 3.8 hours.

Now if we start talking about tablets which are actually shipping we have the iPad 2 knocking the iPad off the top spot ;)

I’ll bet there was at least one old editor at CR who hated having to let this report see the light of day. I’ll always remember this magazine as being the one that downrated a Mac (might’ve been the original iMac) for not having a PCI slot for a NIC card. That model, like many before and after it, had built-in Ethernet.

While I’m inclined to agree, I couldn’t care less what Consumer Reports thinks.
It’s obvious to me given its iPhone 4 report, among others regarding automobiles, that it’s neither objective nor reliable.

I haven’t read very much of theirs in years, but I always guessed that some of their divisions had more genuine expertise than others. I trusted them to product-test housewares and appliances, not consumer electronics.

Consumer Reports is dead to me. Its biased attack on the iPhone 4 as a way to attract attention and Internet traffic destroyed its credibility. I know these are desperate times for publications, but that was really unethical behavior.
