∞ Visiting RIM’s offices with my iPad 2

I know that some people think I’m being mean to RIM, calling them out on not shipping any products and not really having a tablet strategy other than following Apple. I decided to change that and visit RIM.

[ad#Google Adsense 300x250 in story]I thought it would be interesting to take my iPad 2 to RIM’s East Coast offices and compare it to the PlayBook. As you might guess, it would be easier to find a unicorn sprinkling fairy dust around the parking lot than it is to find a PlayBook.

So, while I didn’t get to see a PlayBook, I did get to take this nice picture of me and my iPad 2 outside of the company’s offices. It might be the first time a working tablet has actually made it on RIM property.

  • Steven Fisher

Okay, NOW you’re being mean. And I love it. :)

(I assume you talked to someone and didn’t get anywhere at all?)

  • Anonymous

    Now that’s just too funny!!

  • Cinema

Bwahahahahahaha …. hilarious, yet so very true.

  • Anonymous

One year RIM is going to come out with the Playbook and you will regret it Mr. Dalrymple.

    • http://twitter.com/veryRajat Rajat Kumar

and 2021 is not very very far from now Mr. Dalrymple. *chuckles*

  • Just Walking By

You guys must be very insecure to go all this way to diss RIM. Aside from showing your fanatical fanboyism, it shows a lack of class. No problem with the Ipad2, big problem with all the Apple drones.

    • Steven Fisher

Wow, it’s always fun to meet people with no sense of humor at all!

    • Anonymous

Get over yourself. RIM has been talking about the PlayBook for 6 months, with the Lizard recently saying that they’re “waiting for the right time” to launch the product. It’s time to ship or shut up. Talk is cheap.

    • Anonymous

YOU’RE the one who’s insecure, with your cherished anonymity. And YOU’RE the one who’s doing the silly name calling–as well as MIS-naming those you apparently despise.

I think Jim D. raises some valid questions as to why a company like RIM, which has (or had) such an impressive rep with business, is nowhere to be seen on the tablet front.

Did it waste valuable time scoffing at the first iPad? Most likely. Very foolish and short-sighted.

But to be a little more fair, NO would-be tablet competitor is likely to be able to catch up with or beat Apple’s thriving and vital “ecosystem” of both hardware and software without producing something at least comparable, and then somehow better.

    • Anonymous

You should catch up by reading RIM’s PR for their non-product. They started this conversation.

And your use of the term fanboy to try to shut down discussion just identifies you as a bigot and bully who has no rational argument to make. Tired.

    • Vamsmack

Sorry mate but you’re way off here. Jim is nothing but class but as it was windy that day he had to remove his top hat and monocle.

As previously stated RIM started this conversation comparing their non existent unicorn book with the iPad pointing out how it is going to wipe the floor with any of Apple’s offerings yet thus far have failed to ship ANYTHING. When you’re talking that much trash it’s wise to back it with some action in this case shipping a product which as yet RIM has failed to do.

Clearly this comes from an insecure place in Jims psyche as Apple has only shipped not one but two iterations of it’s tablet device while RIM has sat on the sidelines and just talked about how awesome their unicorn book will be.

Also invoking the ‘fanboi’ tag line degrades your argument.

Don’t ever stop being awesome, Jim.

    Beautiful Jim, just beautiful. LOL

I’m just as much an Apple Fanboy as the next guy, but honestly this strikes me as a bit too Michael Moore for my taste.

    • http://www.theuniversalsteve.com Anonymous

Nah. Michael Moore would have had video of a RIM executive using the iPad 2. Jim’s just being silly. And it made me laugh.

    • Anonymous

OK, so *you* don’t have the balls to speak truth to power. So what?

      • http://twitter.com/CoreyTamas Joel In Real Life

Dude’s standing outside RIM with an iPad 2. He didn’t liberate Egypt. Get some perspective.

  • http://twitter.com/RASTERMAN RASTERMAN

I hear RIM is planning on a name change… Research In Monotony. They don’t even have to change their logo!

Other names they’ve announced, but never got around to implementing… Research in Mimicry, Research In Malaise & Research in Miscarriage.

    Cheers!

Were any representatives of RIM able to meet during this visit? Based on the article’s lack of describing any encounter, should it be assumed this was just a visit to make a humorous point? Regardless, it is a fun article!

  • Dogfacemcgee

    tee hee hee
    go apple!

The beard made him do it.

Kinda dreary view of RIM. One visitor car. No people in evidence. Is that the main office in Waterloo?

  • Huh

Tee hee. Been saying this after having a BB Bold for 2 yrs. Sad, really sad. RIM was unable to look at itself in the mirror. It’s unjustified bravado has shot itself in the foot. It will vanish into obscurity and bancrupcy in no time.

RIM has no clue what it’s doing. Good riddance. IPhone 4 is the greatest thing ever invented…. Period.

  • Anonymous

RIM is raising the bar in the tablet market. PlayBook is the lightest, thinnest, most portable tablet yet. Weight: 0 grams. Width, height, depth: 0, 0, 0 cm. Also, the battery lasts as long as you can imagine. Literally, as long as you can imagine.

    • $330AShareMakesMeVerySad>8-(

RIM = toilet bowl rim and ready to fall in.

If the RIM engineers were shocked by the first iPhone, they’re probably even more shocked at the iPad 2. All battery and tiny little circuit board for both.

    Ossom Jim!

  • John David

    LOL!

    Beautiful Jim, just beautiful!

Hope you took The Beard out for a couple of Heinekens’ after dragging him down there on a cold late winter day in N.S.!

Jim should hide the iPad 2 and not rub it in face of RIM executives. But RIM may be involved in a secret project to create their table computer. The selling of the iPad 2 this past weekend was a success although many fans weren’t able to get one because the stores did not have enough. But the iPad 2 can also be obtained for free if you follow certain conditions at http://www.digitalundivide.com

  • Gary Mulcahey

Ha! Jim you kill me. Nice to see you still have that East Coast sense of humour.

  • Jettgerbil

Ok funny stuff, the beard is a nice touch, didn’t know ZZ Top used an Ipad.
Brass tax is Playbook out on April 19th, blitz of 20,000 retail outlets.
    - Killer software QNX-Bulletproof – 30 years of hard real time use….Autos, space station, reactors, tanks…
1 GIG – Dual Core processor – 1 Gig of Ram, two real cameras, (3 & 5 mega pixel), real multitasking, true portability, this thing comes with “Documents to Go from the Dataviz Division of RIMM…extra on IPAD2…
    - fact Playbook can real access the inernet “Flash” …. No Flash on Ipad2….
    - Now that the date is out maybe it is time to look at the Play book seriously….question have you actually been to any of the trade shows and “worked” with the prototypes???

    • http://mangochut.net/ mangochutney

Writing comment in telegram style is weird — STOP
QNX wasn’t originally developed for tablets — STOP
Everything RIM has done so far is talk — STOP
Until they actually deliver, I don’t believe anything they say —STOP

    • http://www.bynkii.com/ John C. Welch

“worked”? You mean “touched in an approved fashion for a few minutes without being able to actually use the thing in a realistic manner.” There, fixed that for you.

As far as the rest, QNX is indeed a good OS, as is the root of the iPad’s: BSD Unix. However, stability is only one part of the picture. Keep in mind, RIM’s as much as said that no one’s planning on writing native QNX applications for this thing, it’s all going to be Flash, AIR and Android via VMs. They could have build the thing around ESXi for that.

I’m sure Jeff’s Gerbil will be back around May 19th to discuss the millions of Playbooks sold in the first month from their 20,000 retailers. It is going to be a bloodbath.
