∞ Canadians get iOS 4.3 personal hotspot for free

So far, three carriers in Canada have confirmed that the personal hotspot feature in iOS 4.3 will be free if you already subscribe to the 1GB plan. In the U.S. AT&T requires you have the $45 plan and Verizon requires an additional 2GB plan be purchased.

After the iPad 2 reveal this morning during Apple’s media event, Rogers confirmed that Personal Hotspot in iOS 4.3 will be available to Rogers/Fido customers who have a 1GB or higher data plan for free.

That’s the same as their tethering rules, right?

  • I imagine. My plan has free tethering. I have 6Gs.

  • You realize that this seriously changes the economics of our decisions. Do we really need to pay 130$ for 3G if we have iPhones (or other with same options) with the Hotspot feature? That 130 gets you double the memory plus cash in your pocket 😉

    • It’s nice to have options. The WiFi hotspot supposedly a real battery killer, so it might not be the perfect solution for everyone, and not everyone has an iPhone. But I feel a lot better holding onto that 6GB plan of mine, knowing that I can use it this way with my iPad. Good move, Fido.

  • How wonderful would it be for consumers if American carriers were treated like the utilities they used to be?
