∞ Gameloft to develop Unreal Engine 3 games for iOS

Gameloft announced Monday plans to develop four new games using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3. The games will be released in 2011 and 2012, coming to multiple platforms including iOS.

Details on the actual games are scant, but the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) made its debut on iOS in 2010 with the release of Chair Entertainment’s game Infinity Blade. The engine has also been used to create top console titles like Gears of War.

France-based Gameloft has become one of the top developers of games for iOS, with titles like N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance, Asphalt, Real Football and more.

This could be good. Was wonderinghow long it would take before someone licensed it.

I’m fairly sure that the Unreal SDK has been licensed by other companies – it’s just that Gameloft is one of the higher-profile companies to actually announce plans.

In a related story, Epic Games recently announced they’ve raised the threshold for royalties from $5,000 to $50,000 – meaning small game developers can keep more of their initial revenue before they need to start paying back Epic for licensing the UDK for use in their games.
