∞ Fujifilm aims FinePix X100 at advanced, pro photographers

Fujifilm North America on Tuesday introduced the FinePix X100, a new digital camera aimed at advanced consumers and professional photographers. It’s coming in March for $1,199.95.

[ad#Google Adsense 300x250 in story]The FinePix X100 is a digital compact camera with an 12.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. It comes equipped with a 23mm F2 lens and a 2.8-inch LCD display. Fujifilm vaunts the camera as coming with “the world’s first Hybrid Viewfinder,” combining a window-type optical viewfinder found in rangefinder cameras along with an electronic viewfinder system.

The camera touts a design inspired by classic film cameras. Surfaces are die-cast from magnesium alloy; all dials and rings are milled from metal. While it captures images in raw mode, it allows you to apply “film simulation modes” to images to give them the look of being exposed on Velvia, Provia and Astia color film emulsions. There’s also a Monochrome Mode that can be fine-tuned.

Other features include auto-focus choices between a 49-point auto EVF focus area and a 25-point OVF area; 720p HD movie capture; motion panorama function for capturing 180 and 120-degree panoramic photos; and multi-bracketing functions to make sure you’ve captured the scene the way you intended.

I love that the trend towards more capable bridge cameras, with image quality that solwly rivals DSLRs is continuing. The specs of this camera are quite impressive and I love the expectably good build quality and classic design.

I’m not very pleased with the price, though. Don’t get me wrong, quality and technological innovation are expensive, but in my opinion, only people who appreciate the design will buy it at this price.
If someone wants great picture quality in a compact housing they might just go for Sony’s NEX-series or a DSLR. The looks and the price point seem to aim at Leicas digital rangefinder cameras, but those have a reputation to protect them.

I’m not sure which I love more: the camera, or the market savvy it represents. This delivers at least 80% of a Leica’s sex appeal for 20% of the cost, and will take awesome, awesome photos. I’m really glad this wasn’t available when I pulled the trigger on a DSLR and some glass; I probably would have agonized over the decision for another year. :P

I think you have the right idea. I’ll echo mangochutney’s comment about wanting to see something even lower-cost, however. I’d settle for having a fraction of the feature set and maybe even lower-resolution if it meant getting something in this format that I didn’t have to take out a 401K loan to afford.

I had to decide between an entry level DSLR and a good bridge camera a little over two years ago.
In the end I went for the Panasonic DMC-LX3 and I’m very happy with it. It provides nearly all of the features I want, including RAW support and a very capable auto mode (combined with fast start-up times) for when I need to take a quick shot.

Today one has even more choices:
        Canon Powershot S95,
        DMC-LX5,
        a few Ricoh models,
and since today the Nikon Coolpix P300 (http://www.uncrate.com/men/gear/digital-cameras/nikon-coolpix-p300-camera/)

In my opinion these are the cameras the X100 will be compared to in the minds of many consumers.
