∞ Apple, News Corp to hold event to launch The Daily

Apple and News Corp sent out invitations on Thursday to press for the launch of the Daily, a newspaper designed specifically for iPads.

According to the invitation received by The Loop on Thursday, News Corp Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch will be joined by Apple’s Vice President of Internet Services, Eddy Cue to introduce the newspaper.

The event will be held in New York on February 2, 2011 at 11:00 am ET.

Having Eddy Cue on hand for Apple makes sense since Steve Jobs just announced he would be taking a leave of absence from the company. Cue has been responsible for some of the most successful product launches for Apple in recent years.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! Apple is going to get in bed with a “news” organization that’s news in name only? Couldn’t you find anyone reputable to teem up with?

Don’t kid yourself, Apple. There’s a price to be paid for this, your credibility not least. Get ready to pick up the tab. This is going to cost you big time.

News Corp. is the stalking horse for the concept, much like AT&T took chances on the then-unknown iPhone. If The Daily is successful – and that’s not a given – the New York Times and others will follow. It took time to get music publishers to come around to the iTunes Store.
