∞ Mac App Store transition not easy for all devs

Many developers jumped into the Mac App Store with both feet and are loving it. However, it hasn’t been an easy ride for all developers. Sophia Teutschler of Sophiestication Software makes several apps, including the popular CoverSutra. I must say this has turned kind of ugly and I hope that it gets rectified soon. Federico Viticci did a great job of detailing the drama of the story.

Customers are angry at Sophia because she didn’t respect her promise to offer CoverSutra 3.0 as a free upgrade for everyone who purchased a 2.0 license. She says she simply forgot about the promise, she’s not aiming at making “quick money” out of Mac App Store purchases — she could have branded CoverSutra 2.5 as 3.0, offer it for free to previous customers and sell it in the Mac App Store. But in her words, she didn’t because that would have been a lie.

She shouldn’t have promised free upgrades to 3.0 unless she meant it. And it’s not like she couldn’t use Sparkle to upgrade the current installed base until 3.0 is out, and then go App Store Exclusive. I certainly won’t be giving her any of my money.

AppStore stinks… It is buggy and useless tool. Also not fully planned and builded to be ready for production. But yes Apple “knows” what you need… Apple good in hardware making, OS is cool, but applications by itself just sucks…

      What! Buggy and useless?

@perry: He’s just spamming the comments to advertise his “cheating on tests” website.

@hrunga: It does strike me as odd that a developer would/could “forget” a promise like that. But her users were also very, very quick to judge her motives here. You make it sound like supporting two code bases is trivial, and it isn’t. She should make an effort to fulfill her promise, but you might have to wait patiently for her to create (and fully test) a version of her update that uses Sparkle, doesn’t do receipt validation, etc.

I do hope that it’s work in progress and the Mac App Store 2.0 will provide an app upgrade payment model. Plus the lack of promo codes does really affect developers, especially those who got used to use them for getting reviews for apps, rewards and so forth.
