∞ Acer plans to overtake iPad in two or three years

Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci said he thinks it will take his company two or three years to overtake the iPad and Apple’s early lead in the tablet market.

[ad#Google Adsense 300x250 in story]“While iPad has gained successful sales performance and good market response, Apple is centered around the US market with a significant leading status, but its competitive strength may not play out in emerging and other markets, this is the opportunity for Acer,” said Lanci. “Sales of iPad pushed forward very fast initially, but have slowed down in the past few weeks. … We hope our tablet PCs can reach a global market share of 10 percent to 20 percent initially, and become the market leader in 2-3 years.”

Considering the iPad is one of the best selling devices on the market today, I’d say Lanci has his work cut out for him.

In a seaparate interview with AllThingsD, Lanci said he believes a 7-inch tablet is good for the user. Acer announced an Android tablet to be released this year, but later delayed its plans until 2011.

Even though Acer doesn’t have a tablet in the market, Lanci already sees places where he can improve on the iPad.

“Apple for sure is influencing the market. I also believe that if I look at Apple, they influence the market on one side, but there is always room for improvement on the other side,” said Lanci. “Take iPad — when they came out it was without Flash and with certain limitations. With Android products we will fix that. Talking about screen resolution and even in terms of touch, view angles–there are a lot of things where you still have big room for differentiation or improvement compared to Apple.”

I plan to become a billionaire in the next year, too. Also, to have a harem without upsetting my wife.

I see you two have the same types of illusions.

Please don’t mock my insanity, Jim. Like Acer, it’s all I really have. :)

    Sure, if Apple stood still.

Only if Apple went backwards and even then…

Thinking he’s going to overtake Apple with “differentiation” on screen resolution and viewing angles demonstrates just how vastly misguided this poor man is. He obviously does not understand what has made the iPad successful and has no strategy to compete. If I were an Acer shareholder I’d be very worried by what I read here.

Is this story from the Onion? Seriously?

Considering how fast technology moves, Acer better have what it plans for 2-3 years down the road ready today. Three years from now, who knows what the iPad or any tablet will be like? And considering the competition’s track record at predicting Apple’s moves, I don’t think Acer is ready today.

Funny for a company to predict their future when they control only the manufacturing aspect of the business.

Paraphrase: There is a market segment that doesn’t appreciate Apple quality. We are going to build a tablet for them that runs Flash.

Put that way, that might actually be enough to overtake Apple on market share. There’s just no shortage of people with poor taste.

I sincerely believe him. They’ll bring out tablets that sacrifice hardware and user experience quality for a low price and Flash. I have no doubt Acer or similar company will succeed. They will sell a lot more but with horrible profit margins as a deal. One thing I’m sure won’t happen, it will be far from success as a platform.

I’m sure Microsoft had similar goals with the Zune.
