∞ Report: Verizon iPhone on sale in early 2011

Apple will begin mass producing a new CDMA iPhone by the end of 2010 and begin selling the device in early 2011, according to a new report.

[ad#Google Adsense 300x250 in story]Citing people who have been briefed by Apple on the new device, the WSJ said the new iPhone would be similar in design to the current iPhone 4.

Apple is also said to be developing a new iPhone model, making it the 5th generation model. There is no details in the report whether this will come out sooner than expected or if it will be replacing the iPhone 4 next summer, during Apple’s normal release schedule.

People who said they were briefed by Apple on the 5th generation iPhone said it would be a different form factor than those currently available.

Groan! Will these Bigfoot sightings ever cease?

If there is a CDMA iPhone waiting in the wings it probably won’t be sold here in the USA

Exactly! If and when CDMA iPhones actually do ship, I don’t think they would be Verizon iPhones. Verizon wants to turn back the clock, back to before the iPhone of 2007, when the carriers controlled the user experience. Apple said they would shift the control to themselves, and Verizon said no. Google provided Android, open to Verizon’s control, and I don’t see anything changing. Next year, Verizon may just be the EXCLUSIVE non-iPhone carrier!

    Let’s recap the day’s events…

    1) WSJ reports iPhone coming to Verizon in Q1 2011.

    2) Verizon CEO sidesteps questions about the WSJ article saying “go ask Apple”. No outright denial from Verizon. This is new.

    3) Motorola sues Apple for patent infringement. Does Motorola know something we don’t?

  • Daniel Swanson

I don’t care about the articles, opinions, gossip, carping about AT&T, whining about carriers, etc.

It’s a logical assumption that Apple is simply got its head down and working on the next phone. As relatively well-received as the iPhone 4 was–despite its alleged problems–all the other products and Android features out there now give Apple a chance to do a significant leap frog with the next model.

We’d be iPhone 4 owners now, but for some conflicting financial priorities.

So if this new rumor bears out, perhaps we’ll just wait for the 5 next year. Should be interesting.
