Apple delays white iPhone 4 until later this year

By Jim DalrympleJuly 23, 2010, 6:07 am PT

Apple issued a statement on Friday saying the white iPhone 4 is being delayed again, this time until later this year.

iphone4antenna 300x216 Apple delays white iPhone 4 until later this year“White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.”

The white iPhone 4 model has never made it to the public yet. When the iPhone 4 first went on sale Apple said the white model would not be available until late July.

There is no indication why the white model has been delayed.

Pretty embarrassing for Apple as far as I’m concerned. Even more embarrassing than the antenna affair.
It’s not like Apple to announce a product, then fail to deliver it.
Sure, there sometimes are technical hurdles one cannot foresee, I can’t help but get the feeling, that the white model was a late addition to the line-up, though.

I think it’s more embarrassing that some of you feel compelled to cast aspersions about a great company and product based solely on a color that’s proving difficult to product.

If ever there was a time to “give (a company) a break” it’s now. Apple is a great team who work their hearts out to produce great products, and they just finished yet another financial quarter with stellar statistics–facts which should outweigh by far any minor/trivial problems which may pop up.

        No, it’s valid criticism.

You calling my post ‘aspersions’ lead me to believe that,
        1. you like AMB, just as I,
        2. you don’t know my stance on Apple in general.

I don’t care about your stance on Apple in general. And your reference to the financial article is a separate subject.

I’m addressing what you said about the white iPhone.

I’m giving Apple a break here, as far as the ‘antenna problems’ are concerned. I don’t particularly care about them and truly believe that they’re almost a non issue — at least to people who have half a brain and know anything about physics.

But the problems with the white iPhone 4 are a wholly different matter.
            1. Apple announced the device alongside the black one, and didn’t mention with one word that it won’t be available at launch day.
            2. They then explained that there is some problem with the manufacturing process that they have not gotten under control yet. They didn’t elaborate and didn’t give us a clue as to when expect it, which was right from their point of view, but left people waiting.
            3. During the press conference Jobs said that the white model will be available by late July and now they’re delaying it again. You’d think that Jobs would get a viable date from his COO, but hey, this is business.

I wasn’t slamming Apple, I wasn’t blowing this out of proportion and I wasn’t pulling a Winer or Gewirtz, declaring that “Apple is dead, because they can’t deliver the white iPhone 4 on time”.
If you had read my comment more carefully you’d have noticed that.

I was expressing my disappointment that I won’t be able to get my hands on a white iPhone 4 anytime soon — as I like it much better than the black one — and that Apple would’ve been better off, if they had just told people weeks ago what they told them today.

I am not being facetious but

“White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected”

“There is no indication why the white model has been delayed.”

    • Jim Dalrymple says:

LOL. What I meant is that there was no specific reason, like they ran out of white coloring :)

      But still, that was funny.
