∞ Apple says 400 iTunes accounts affected by weekend hacks

We’ve all heard about the App Store hacks that happened over the July 4th long weekend and the fact that Apple kicked out the developer that caused the problems, but now we also know how many people were affected by the hack. I contacted Apple today and they told me that about 400 user accounts were caught up in the mess. That’s 400 out of 150 million registered users or 0.0003 percent.

Is the 0.0003 percent suppose to be consoling? Do they know whose accounts were affected?

What is consoling for those who were not affected is that Apple’s iTunes servers weren’t breached. See http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/07/07/only_400_itunes_accounts_compromised_in_fraud_apple_says.html. This means that the attack were almost cerainly either a Trojan or phishing attacks or both. There is nothing Apple or any online vendor can do about that, because these kinds of attacks operate by tricking the user into giving up passwords and/or installing malware.

However, for the victims of these attacks, it is regrettable, because we can all be fooled.
