Possible explanation for the yellow screen iPhone 4

By Jim DalrympleJune 24, 2010, 7:41 am PT

Some of those that received their iPhone 4 before today’s official launch have complained about screen discoloration. Specifically, a yellow blotch on the bottom of the screen is showing up on some phones. However, the discoloration may not be permanent or a defect with the phone. In fact, it could be a problem resulting from how quick Apple is manufacturing and shipping the phones.

Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. Apparently, Apple (or more likely Foxconn) is shipping these products so quickly that the evaporation process is not complete. However, after one or two days of use, especially with the screen on, will complete the evaporation process and the yellow “blotches” will disappear.

How do I know? I was involved in pitching Z-6011 to Apple.

Apple should have waited a few more weeks to put off the delivery dates resolve these issues.

As it is, the hundreds of reports of these blotches plus the glass not being as strong as even the plastic in the 3gs from what people say, has led me to call Apple and cancel my order.

You know, these two issues really are hilarious and an exercise in how quickly hysteria spreads on the internet. Just go read the multitudes of misinformed comments and rampant speculation on these issues all over the net – turns out antenna issue can also occur in 3G and 3GS with iOS4 and this is just because the phones are brand spanking new.

I’m pretty sure the flames are being fanned by Fandroids amongst the iPhone hater crowd too.

I for one love my new iPhone 4.
