∞ Quicken Essentials lowers price, adds features

Intuit on Friday announced a lower price and new features for Quicken Essentials, its personal finance software. The software will now cost $49.99; customers who purchased it at the higher price of $69.99 will be eligible for a refund for the difference – the offer is good through May 31, 2010.

Quicken Essentials was developed for users who want to track income and expenses, including bills and paychecks, create customized budgets, plan financial goals and more. You can use it to track activity in your bank, using credit cards, loans and other financial tools. Quicken Essentials can also automatically categorize your transactions for you.

New features are coming to Quicken Essentials by the end of May, and they include the ability to password-protect files and export transaction data to spreadsheets.

Intuit also plans to roll out new features for Quicken Essentials between now and the end of 2010. Those plans include the ability to enter investment info from brokerages that don’t download to Quicken directly; comparison of spending between time periods; export of tax-deductible expenses to tax filing programs; and the ability to track budgets across several months.

It's okay as far as it goes. But they need to add the ability to reconcile accounts. I sure hope the investement features allow tracking 401K accounts as such rather than as savings accounts. It really distorts the meaning of "savings" as far as I'm concerned.

They really did need to do the $20 refund, considering the mess the launch was. Ah well, we'll see if they have a generous upgrade deal next year. If Jumsoft's sofware was more capable in areas I was interested in, I would have jumped on that. As it is, Mint.com integration and what promise that has is the only reason I'm sticking with Quicken for now.

I tried it for less than a day before realizing they left out a few of the "essentials" that were previously included. Like the ability to export your data. After being a beta tester back in the 2002 time frame, I have ZERO confidence in Intuit doing the right thing.

I'm glad they're trying. I had completely given up on Intuit. Once they get online bill pay and advanced investment features back to the same level as Quicken, I'll get Essentials. Until then I remain stuck with Quicken 2006.
