∞ Police investigate lost iPhone prototype

There’s quite a twist in the story of the lost iPhone prototype on Friday — the local police are investigating. There is no word on whether the investigation, reportedly headed by the computer crime task force is investigating Gizmodo for purchasing the phone or the person that found the phone and sold it to Gizmodo. It’s going to be interesting to see if the police can track down the individual that found the device at the bar where it was lost by the Apple engineer.

And they should investigate. The phone was not found, it was taken from where it was left. It the incident happened the way it has been reported, I would have ether given the phone to the Bar staff in case the person came back for it, or If I would have identified it for what it really was, I would have made it immediately available to Apple with no expectation of any sort of compensation. It indeed the person profited like Guizmodo report states, then it was a criminal exchange of stolen merchandise and all parties involve should be held accountable.

I agree, and hopefully the engineer learned a lesson.

This whole episode sounds fishy, even by Gizmodo's description. The story was so full of holes it wasn't even funny. Plus this whole outing of the unfortunate Apple engineer on their site made them worse than paparazzi or yellow journalism.
