Apple on Friday notified developers that it has begun accepting apps designed for the iPad. Apple also confirmed for The Loop that the iPad App Store will launch on April 3.

Only apps submitted by March 27 at 5pm will be eligible for the initial launch, according to Apple.

“We’ve opened the initial submission process for developers to submit apps for iPad and we are looking forward to having an amazing line up of apps available when the iPad ships on April 3,” an Apple spokesperson told The Loop.

Most developers have used an iPad simulator to make and test and their apps. Some developers and media companies have had access to the device, but those are few and far between.

It will be interesting to see how many iPad specific apps will be ready for day one. There does seem to be a lot of interest in the developer community, which makes sense considering the success many of them saw when the iPhone App Store launched.

Update: Added confirmation from Apple that the iPad App Store will open on April 3.

Because testing software on the actual device it's designed to run on is for pussies!

  2. And then expect a whooooole lotta 1.1 updates a week after developers can actually see what it's like to use their apps on a physical device…

  3. I don't disagree with that at all.

Do you think this is going to blow out the approval process again? Also what would annoy me is if there are suddenly 2 copies of each app appearing in a search one iPad app and one iPhone version.

Sometimes I think Apple makes things unnecessarily complicated…

    • Adobephile says:

The apparent "complexity" is not unnecessary. We're simply unaccustomed to dealing with many truly innovative products like the iPad—especially one with a large developer community attached. The secrecy is necessary—more so with the iPad than with other types of new products before their respective deliveries to the market. If that "complicates" things for developers, then so be it. The inconveniences won't last long.
