∞ AT&T's CEO gets 35% pay hike, makes $20.3 million

It’s a good news, bad news story for AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson when looking at his 2009 pay package. The bulk of Stephenson’s pay was in the form of stock awards, which were valued at 12.1 million, down 8 percent over the 2008. (In case you didn’t know, that folks, was the bad news). The good news is that Stephenson earned a $5.85 million performance bonus pulling his 2009 salary up 35 percent over 2008 to 20.3 million.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, who made $15 million in 2008, asked his union employees to take a 40 percent cut in pay and announced the company can no longer afford to pay employee health benefits, he wants the 110,000 employees to pay between $3,300 to $4,500 a year toward their own health care coverage.. Stephenson terminated over 2,500 employees in 2009 and expects to terminate thousands more and what did he get, a 35 percent increase in compensation to $20.3 million, this included a $5.85 million cash bonus. His board determined he had earned this money "in light of the economic environment and the workforce reductions." This is one of the few times a board of directors stated in their proxy statement that a CEO was rewarded for terminating employees. This is a direct affront to AT&T’s unions.
