By Peter CohenFebruary 25, 2010, 5:09 am PT

Square Enix has released Final Fantasy I and Final Fantasy II for the iPhone and iPod touch – each is now available from the App Store for $8.99.

finalfantasy 300x201 Final Fantasy I and II come to the iPhoneBoth are legendary role playing games that trace their lineage back to 1987 and 1988 respectively, when they were first released in Japan. They’re graphical role playing adventure games that originated on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) video game console. The Final Fantasy franchise is now in its 14th incarnation, and has spawned movies, animated series and other spinoffs.

In Final Fantasy, players guide the Warriors of Light as they set out on a quest to restore crystals. Final Fantasy II follows the story of four war-orphaned heroes who become embroiled in a plot rich with political intrigue.

Both iPhone games include content not originally bundled with the first game. Final Fantasy adds the bonus dungeons “The Soul of Chaos” and “The Labyrinth of Time,” while Final Fantasy II adds “The Soul of Rebirth” and “The Arcane Labyrinth.”

System requirements call for an iPhone or iPod touch running iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

  1. Hells yeah! I plonked down money for FF 1 yet another time just now.
Once they get FF4 and FF6 on there my existence can end peacefully.

Also, pixel-doubled FF on iPad in a few months. Good times

Heh! Yeah, the price is bound to raise some eyebrows – $8.99 isn't cheap for an iPhone game these days – but I think Final Fantasy commands a premium on its name alone, and Square Enix certainly understands that.

I've actually deferred to my soon-to-be 13 year old daughter, who's the resident expert on the Final Fantasy series in our house. She spent some time with the iPhone version and declared it a success. She's played through the Game Boy Advance version a few times and says the controls are easier to use on the iPhone and the graphics look better too.

She's anxiously awaiting Apple to announce a new iPhone, because she knows I'm going to hand down my 3G to her…

i'll wait for a full ipad version.

So, are these ports of the "Dawn of Souls" re-release/port that came out for the GBA a few years back? The revamped graphics and the fact that the extra content contains the word "Souls" seems to indicate so.
