Apple offers free iTunes LP Holiday Sampler

By Jim DalrympleDecember 10, 2009, 7:26 pm PT

Apple is feeling the holiday spirit. The company on Thursday posted an iTunes Holiday Sampler and it’s free.

What’s more, the Holiday Sampler album is in the iTunes LP format, which means you get some extras. With the iTunes LP format you can browse photos, read lyrics and check out information about the artists.

You can download the free album for one week only from the iTunes Store.

I think this gives us some sort of idea what the iTunes LP format can do. I wish I had an Apple TV to see how it works there.

But I think most of the performances were pretty lackluster. Way too stylized and insincere.

Is there a name for that style of singing which was made popular initially by Whitney Houston with all those arpeggios/trills which seemingly the majority of pop singers these days try to copy? I think it’s distinctly counter-productive when it interrupts the fundamental rhythms inherent in the various Christmas classics.

Doesn’t work for me as it comes up with the usual “The item you’ve requested is not currently available in the Australia store”
    Not fair…

Looking through the contents of the LP bundle, it looks like Lady Gaga and The Boxmasters were going to be in the album at some point, but didn’t make the final version. See “iTunes Holiday Sampler – iTunes LP.itlp / images / lyrics”, album_15.png and album_16.png

I listened to the (sample) tracks. While the free album selection is “decent enough”, none of them are really A-list Christmas material.

I would define A-list Christmas tunes as the classics… the ones that are typically played and requested over Radio over and over again…. EVERY… FREAKIN… CHRISTMAS…. SEASON. Elvis has “Here Comes Santa Claus”. That’s an indisputable classic. So is Boney M’s Mary’s Boy Child. So is Gene Autrey’s Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer. And then you have Perry Como singing There’s No Place Like Home For The Holidays. And even Celine Dion’s O Holy Night seems to top the charts every now and then.

Again…. this free iTunes album… contains B-rate or C-rate material. No A-list tracks. No wonder the album is free.

Please Apple. If you really want to be generous just once a year…. then give away free tracks or albums that are actually worth paying for.
