MacUpdate Desktop 5.0.1 fixes numerous bugs

By Jim DalrympleNovember 9, 2009, 4:06 pm PT

Software update Web site, MacUpdate, on Monday released an update for its MacUpdate Desktop application that allows users to stay up-to-date on the latest apps without checking the Web site.

First released in late October, MacUpdate said the new version fixes a number of bugs including one that caused no apps to be found on some systems. Other changes in MacUpdate Desktop 5.0.1 include automatically cleaning up expanded, improved version matching and not losing your selection when an update completes.

A couple of new features have been added to the application, as well. An option to “download only” has been added to the Updates Menu and a file size column has been added to the listings.

A full list of changes is available from the MacUpdate Web site.

MacUpdate Desktop 5.0.1 includes a fully functioning 10 trial for all users.

Looks interesting. I haven’t been all that thrilled with AppFresh, so something like this could be just what I’m looking for. Just downloaded and installed it. But a 10-day trial? C’mon, MacUpdate. Where’s the love?

If I Win …give it to the person with the comment directly below mine.

It’s a very handy program, though I haven’t tried this latest version yet.

The Beard compelled me to send packets this way.

Nice to see more of these products coming out. Auto update is good, but this makes it a lot easier for those apps you do not use often.

Cool. I’ve always wanted something like this, since I get frustrated sometimes when I go to use an app and find there’s an update, and then have to wait for it to download & update before using the app (this is self-imposed, I realize). MacUpdate Desktop sure seems like it’d solve this problem for me.

[Note to The Beard: Posting a comment using the mobile version of this 'site didn't work for me. Tried posting within Tweetie, but after filling everything out & pressing "Publish," just got a spinning gear for 5 minutes & nothing happened. Same thing in Mobile Safari. This was on either 3G or wifi, on an iPhone 3GS...just tryin' to help!]

Been using MU since it came out and reminds me how VersionTracker is but a shadow of its former self since being acquired by CNET. Long live MU!

Love MacUpdate! Desktop app would be a killa edition to my arsenal.

Coincidentally, I’ve been using the 10-day free trial of MU Desktop. I really like the convenience it provides.

I have so many apps installed now that this could be worth trying!

Sounds like a great way to keep up with app updates. Think I’ll give the 10-day trial a shot.

Sounds interesting. Would like to try it….

This is great. I’ve been using MU and VersionTracker and recently tried TechTracker. I didn’t know MU had such a thing, it certainly would be nice to switch!

Of course soon enough there will be no competition to open-source versions.

Very good client and a fantastic tool for keeping your Mac up to date and managed.

The winner of the first MacUpdate Desktop 5.0 one-year subscription is post #13 made by Schalliol.

I asked my wife to choose a number from 1-21 and she chose 13. I skipped my two comments and the one comment from BearsFan talking about the iPhone.

I’ll do another winner tomorrow, so everyone is still eligible.

Would love to get this software. Why?

I have Update OCD. I need everything on my Mac to be the latest version, even if I have stopped using the software.

I love the integrated download/install very handy!

Checking for updates every week is fine for me, but my husband is for some reason compelled to check every day. Sometimes more than once a day. This could feed his habit.

I’m so thankful for this free subscription. I just got it going today, and WOW! I didn’t realize that MacUpdate would not just send me to Webpages but instead try to download all of the apps and install them. With all the apps I have, this is fantastic!
