Orb shares your Mac’s media online

By Peter CohenNovember 6, 2009, 7:28 am PT

Orb Networks has announced the release of Orb for Macintosh. The software enables Mac users to tap into the media streaming service that’s been available for the iPhone since 2008. And it’s free.

Installed on a Mac that sports a broadband connection to the Internet, Orb lets you stream music, videos, photos and other content with any other device on the Internet. So you can listen to your own iTunes library, for example, from a system at work, or from a friend’s computer.

You can also share your media with others – you can e-mail them or text message them to let them know that you’ve made media available. Orb also works with video game consoles, so you can stream content to your home entertainment system using your Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii.

Orb’s $9.99 iPhone client has been available for some time, though it’s relied on connecting specifically to a Windows PC running the Orb software in order to work.

System requirements call for Mac OS X 10.5 or later.
