Good news for European drivers looking for directions with their iPhones: TomTom on Monday announced that its car kit for the iPhone is now available, both from TomTom’s own Web site and Apple’s online store.
Developed to complement TomTom’s turn-by-turn direction software for the iPhone, the car kit provides you with a secure mount that lets you position the iPhone on your dashboard or windshield, just as you would use a dedicated-purpose TomTom device. It rotates to allow you to use the iPhone in either portrait or landscape mode, and lets you pop out the iPhone with a twist.
The kit also includes a built-in GPS receiver that, according to TomTom, reduces the likelihood that you’ll drop out of a GPS connection where GPS reception is limited — densely-developed urban areas with lots of tall buildings, for example, or forested regions. The GPS receiver also provides improved positioning.
Also included is a built-in loudspeaker and microphone; the loudspeaker announces voice instructions, and the microphone helps you make or receive calls hands-free while driving. Other features include the ability to charge the iPhone’s battery, or play iPhone music through the auxiliary out port, to your car stereo (using the vehicle’s aux in port, if so equipped).
Compatible with the iPhone 3G and 3GS, the TomTom Car Kit for iPhone costs €99.99. Countries where the kit is available include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden and Switzerland.
Price is a bit high … you can almost get a full Garmin or tomtom GPS for €99.99 …

Oh, it’s higher than that, even. That’s just for the kit. You have to buy the software separately.
The Tomtom App + mounting kit + iPhone combo is only interesting if you insist on having _one_ device for everything … and the App is pretty useless without a mounting kit.
I just hope it fixes the problems I found with service. http://www.loopinsight.com/2009/08/16/hands-on-tomtom-gps-navigation-for-the-iphone/
Or I can go with MapQuest for 99 cents and it comes with 14 days of free service, and it costs $30 a year. With turn-by-turn directions and voice.
Um, let’s see here…$219.00, or $30.99.
If MapQuest has John Cleese’s or Homer Simpson’s voices, I’m in!
Doh! You missed the turn for the Ministry of Silly Walks!
I want Ozzy’s voice.
You wouldn’t be happy unless the opening from Crazy Train started every time you turned on your car’s ignition key.
I’m afraid I wouldn’t understand enough of what Ozzy says to get anywhere.
I'm amazed and happy to say that garmin products is of high quality albeit the price is also a bit high but it's worth paying.
