TomTom releases video detailing iPhone car kit

By Jim DalrympleAugust 22, 2009, 9:57 pm PT

TomTom recently posted a video on YouTube detailing its car kit for the iPhone app released last week.

The car kit for iPhone is a mount that connects to your window and features a built-in GPS, a feature the company said would enhance the GPS signal. That seems to be a good idea — in my tests TomTom consistently lost the GPS signal, while Navigon did not in the same areas.

The car kit also comes with a hands-free microphone for hands free calling, audio out so you can play music through your car stereo, and a speaker so you can hear instructions and phone calls.

You don’t need the car kit for the TomTom iPhone app to work.

  1. That’s a good video. Shows how the system works very smoothly and efficiently.

Looks like it’s designed well, and that they’ve poured a lot of time and attention (and money) into it. It’ll probably sell well.

Kinda wish I needed one. Looks like it’s fun to use.

Hmmm…since i has GPS built into the car kit, why didn’t they take it a step farther and design the Tom Tom app so that a Touch could use that GPS functionality?

I believe it will work with the iPod Touch. I also think that the reason for delay in releasing the car kit is that it will work with the rumored 6″ Touch that’s about to be released. There may be a second clip in the kit, or the 6″ could possibly fit the clip the other way. A 6″ screen would be MUCH more functional in a car.

Do you if there is a connector to plug an external GPS antenna ?

If there is none, this car kit will be useless for me. My actual GPS is always loosing signal due to the athermic windshield of my car, and it has a SirfStar III chip which can handle signal loss.

Car Kit? Scared it would turn my iPhone into a brick from the massive heat generated by metal, plastic and glass in direct sunlight for hours on end. Rather just spend a couple hundred for a TomTom or Garmin — they seem to hold up well as they were built for this type of heat. The iPhone can lock up on me sometimes just being in my pocket on a hot day.

    No thanks.

Good point. I have a built-in Nav system in my Toyota that I think is probably better than any add-on system. My girlfriend and her daughter both have iPhones, I’ve yet to get one. They’re cool, but a little buggy still.

    • Robert says:

It’s not the heat from your pocket. -I bet you put it in your back pocket. It’s the pressure on the top left hand on the glass front. Press it and see. You can lock your iPhone that way. Don’t sit on your iPhone and it will be fine.

      • James Gowan says:

Not true, Robert. You’re assuming it’s my back pocket I have my phone in. Only a moron would put an iPhone in his back-pocket and sit on it constantly.

It’s my front jeans pocket and I wear loose-fitting Levi 506s. It’s definitely the heat. It doesn’t happen often, but at least twice and the phone was very hot. Once it had cooled down, it was fine.

If you read all the info in the box when you buy, you’ll see that there are limits to temperature that you should operate the iPhone. Heat and Cold both.

I going to wait a bit. But if it’s too expensive, forget it.

It seems Jim has the worst experience with it compared to other reviews I’ve read. But it’s enough to give me pause. So for once I won’t be an early adopter.

  7. Phillip says:

Why buy it, First the Tom Tom app is to expensive, Just buy a dedicated GPS. Having my Iphone exposed to direct sun light in the window, just doesn’t sound good to me.
