Hands On: Planet Waves Chordmaster for iPhone

By Jim DalrympleAugust 3, 2009, 5:04 pm PT

I was really interested to see what Planet Waves came up with for the iPhone. A traditional hardware company moving to the iPhone — I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.

Planet Waves ChordmasterAs a long time guitar player, I’ve used Planet Waves — and its parent company, D’Addario’s — guitar gear for many years. I’ve grown to trust their gear, but let’s be honest, software applications are a whole different ball game.

First of all, I was glad to see that Planet Waves put so much work into the interface. It seems clear from the first time you open the app that they spent a lot of time thinking about the interface and how to best set it up for the user.

The wheels at the top of the app allow you to choose the chord, chord type and variants. Whatever options you choose will show up on the virtual fretboard, with the finger positions marked. It looks like a typical guitar tab diagram, so it’s familiar and easy to read.

Planet Waves ChordmasterYou can move the chord up and down the fretboard by using the arrows on the left hand side. And of course, you’ll want to hear how it sounds, right? Chordmaster supports that too.

To hear what a chord sounds like, just drag your finger over the keyboard and you’ll hear it. Chordmaster comes with more than 7,800 chords, giving you a look at almost any chord you could ever think of.

Chordmaster is a very well thought out and put together application. Whether you’re looking for a brand new sound or a variation on one of your favorites, this app will be able to help you.

Chordmaster costs $1.99 and is available from the App Store.
