∞ App Store comes to the Mac

bodega4Apple’s App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch has been hugely successful, and now IDFusion is going to try to do the same thing for the Mac with a new app called Bodega.

I wrote a detailed story on CNET this morning, including an interview with Phil Letourneau, the User Interface Designer for Bodega, that should answer many of the questions you may have about the launch of Bodega. Letourneau has some big plans for the software in the future.

The app is free for developers and users. I’ve had a chance to use it over the past few weeks and it’s a very nice looking app — just what you’d expect from a Mac developer.

You can head over to CNET and read the interview and details of the app.

Just submitted 3 of my apps. Gonna be hard to tear me away from MacUpdate though.

But you don’t have to leave MacUpdate do you?

I probably needed to clarify. I was just saying it would take quite a bit for Bodega to become my main way to find apps. I’d be more inclined to just keep going to MU out of habit until I know it has become popular enough with devs.

I have to say, their submission process is quite nice, though. It bests MU, and beats the hell out of VersionTracker. VT was a pain to submit to before CNET swallowed them. The CNET registration procedure is so bad I’ll no longer be updating my software on VT.

I see. I really like MU. Always have.

It really seems like Bodega has a lot on the ball. Very interesting development in the Mac market.

Can’t complain, the three apps I submitted have already been approved and I got a $10 iTunes gift card to boot.

I really do hope they succeed.

It’s nice that it tells you which apps on your Mac are outdated too. Kinda like a 3rd party software update.

I’ve been waiting for Apple to wake up to App Store-like delivery of software to the desktop. Seems like a move they should have made a year or so ago. I too am a big MU fan but the Bodega UI is way too cutesy for me. Taking the “shop” metaphor a little too literally methinks. Still putting bits in a box hasn’t made any sense for years and if this move spurs Apple into action so much the better for all us developers.

Zwei makes a very important comment about fast app approval!!! PLEASE Apple fix the nightmare that is the current approval process!!! Banning dictionaries??? Come on!

HowManoid, I certainly hope this sparks Apple into treating devs better, they deserve it.
