∞ AT&T offers $49 iPhone 3G refurbs

AT&TAT&T is pulling out all the stops to sell new and used iPhones.

The company, late Friday began offering refurbished iPhones for as low as $49. The iPhones are only available through AT&T’s Web site.

Earlier this week Apple reported a $1.23 billion profit in its fiscal third-quarter. It was a big quarter for iPhones as Apple sold 5.2 million of the devices, representing 626 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.

Great strategy. Guess the name of the game is to sign new subscribers. Great opportunity for customers, AT&T, and Apple. Apple and partner have got the goods–in this case, a phone that is still far and away better than any of the competition’s, and now they’re that much more attractive at this low price, as well as most likely being “Apple Careable”.

You look at Apple today with its vast array of great products and then start with its current star draw, the iPhone. Far greater numbers of people need phones than need computers. But with this phone, they get exposed to The Apple Way in the form of OS X right up next to their heads.

I wonder if Apple is tracking product sales to people who had previously bought iPhones.

That’s a great point and something I’d be interested to know as well. It certainly was their strategy with Final Cut Pro in the post production market, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was all quite calculated.

  • Might jump on this

I have a first gen, and I wonder if I can get this deal without locking in my contract for 2 years. I promised myself that I wouldn’t buy the 3G S until I pay off my credit card, which will take the better part of a year, but at that time I want to upgrade my phone to the 32 (?) Gig. I would love to get out of my 1st gen phone, though.

Looks like it might be time to get rid of the wife’s RAZR… Yea for one more Apple convert!
