Safari tops 11 million downloads in three days

Apple said Safari 4 was downloaded more than 11 million times in its first three days of being available.

safari 287x300 Safari tops 11 million downloads in three daysEleven million is certainly a strong number for the browser, but what’s even more interesting is that six million of those downloads were from Windows users. It seems clear that despite the choices available for Windows users, they continue to be dissatisfied.

Of the features in Safari 4, Apple boasts speed as one of its main advantages. Apple says the new Nitro JavaScript engine that executes JavaScript nearly eight times faster than IE 8 and more than four times faster than Firefox 3. Add to that its ability to load HTML pages three times as fast as Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox and you get an idea of why so many people are downloading it.

Safari includes many features over its predecessor, including Top Sites, Cover Flow and the ability to search your history.

Safari 4 is a free download from Apple’s Web site.

In all the articles I have read about this 11 million downloads, no one has mentioned if this includes downloads through Apple Software Update.

Although I doubt there is a reliable way to measure, I am curious to know how many Windows users downloaded Safari 4 because Apple Software Update, which installed with iTunes, prompted them to download and install it, and they clicked “OK” without paying attention.
